“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” (James 1:23-24)
People who read the Word of God and also apply it, will not only be blessed by God, but are also able to pass in on.
Ezra 7:10 (NIV)
This verse tells us that Ezra was devoted to studying the Bible (the Law of the Lord) all the time. He wanted to live by what he learned. He did this wholeheartedly. He wanted to teach what he had learned to others, as well.
When reading the Bible, we can scan the text quickly, or really try to understand what it says. It may take some time and a little effort, but it pays off. “Who looks at a field and never digs will not discover the pearls that God has buried in that field.” This passage can be found in Matthew 13:45-46. Do not be discouraged with the thought that the Bible would be too difficult to understand. The Holy Spirit of God wants to explain the Word to us. God reveals His Word to anyone who is open to it. (cf. Matthew 11:25)
This is probably the hardest part of reading the Bible. The reading, studying, and trying to understand can be a pleasant task for some, but to actually act accordingly demands obedience. We are dealing with the Word of God and so we must take it very seriously. God will reward obedience to Him. Many commands in the Bible are connected to a promise of blessing, help and encouragement from God. Let the Word of God flow from our hands and feet.
It’s not that difficult to give someone a Bible. But telling other people what the Bible says is what matters. Ezra teaches us the importance of the order in which we do things: first study and understand, apply in your own life, and then tell others about it. Anyone can pass on His Word to others. You don’t have to be a teacher. You can share what you’ve read, understood, and applied in your own life, so they too will see the greatness of God.
Lastly, we take a look at verse 9. During the long, arduous, and dangerous journey from Babylon to Jerusalem, Ezra enjoyed God’s special protection. Why? Because he handled God's Word with care.
