When God gives us a command, He also gives us a promise. God protects us and helps us to carry out our task. That should be a strong motivation to accept the commands of the King of Kings and to carry them out faithfully.
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Joshua has a big task in front him. Moses, the leader of the people of Israel, had passed away and hadn’t been able to fulfill his task to bring the people of Israel (more than a million people) safely to the Promised Land, crossing several enemies. This is what Joshua had before him.
Joshua receives an extra command.
We need not tremble and fear when God gives us a task. We need to perform this task with determination and stay strong until the end. It will not always be easy, therefore there is the additional command. Determinations and perseverance are needed to do what we have been ordered.
We can be stopped by people who know better, or by circumstances which do not cooperate. Someone who is close to us, might be against us. Or we don’t have any money left. When the command comes from God, we know that these things are not going to stop us.
We can become discouraged when things turn out differently that we planned. When it takes more time or when we are disappointed in the results we made so far. But God doesn’t want us to be discouraged. By anything or anybody.
How can we be determined? How do we not let ourselves be discouraged? Because God Himself is with us and He will help us.
We find this hard to believe when putting it into practice. We cannot see God, but He promises to be with us. We need to believe this, then we are able to fully rely on His promise. Faith and trust goes hand in hand with each other.
The presence of God means that He will guide and assist us. He helps us to carry out His will. Whatever we need to do, wherever we need to go: it’s a promise!
