How does a holy, immortal, unending God help a sinful, mortal, and tiny human? God’s answer: by becoming a human Himself and be like man in every way (but without sin), to take all sin onto Himself, and thus reuniting man with Himself.
Jesus Christ, Son of God, has taken this task upon Him. His great purpose was to reach all the people with this saving work. In Mark chapter 1, we read about three important things that Jesus did in order to reach that purpose.
Mark 1:32-34 (NIV)
People brought all the sick to Jesus and He healed them. In this manner, He showed them through His might and authority that He cares about the people. This is how we may know Him.
Mark 1:38-39 (NIV)
We have the tendency to focus our attention on healing, miracles and wonders. Are miracles unimportant? No, but the Bible lets us know, and confirms it in verse 38, that His Word comes first and is then followed by wonders.
The teachings about sin and forgiveness reveal more about who Jesus is, than any miracle or wonder! In verse 38, Jesus Himself says that He has come to preach.
Mark 1:35-37 (NIV)
The third thing Jesus does in order to reach His purpose, which is reaching all people with His saving work, is to stay in conversation with God, His Father. Even though Jesus is God’s Son, He wants to stay in close contact with His heavenly Father every step of the way. He wants to receive everything from Him: vision, strength, wisdom, and guidance.
His disciples sought for Him, surprised that they could not find Him. Why do we seek Him? For the miracles and wonders? For the benefits of having a relationship with Him? Of do we seek Him, because we need His grace, His salvation, His teachings, and His guidance?
Jesus wants us to know who He is (in His might, authority and reign), that we know about His message of sin and forgiveness, and that we can live in dependence of the Father, like He did. Only then can He reach His purpose in our lives.
